Bobby Fischer’s Visit to the Philippines 1973 with President Ferdinand Marcos (via nirocal)
Photos of Bobby Fischer’s visit to the Philippines in 1973, hosted by President Ferdinand Marcos, to open the International Chess Tournament. These came from albums that were a personal gift from Marcos himself to Fischer to commemorate his trip. Fischer abandoned a storage unit in Pasadena when he fled the United States, and these albums were part of his belongings left behind. Many of his chess memorabilia were in that storage and ended up in a local flea market in LA.
This is a different video, and different set of photos, from the one I previously posted.

No, no, no, no! Don’t you ever order anything from chesscentral.com. Their delivery service is awful! I ordered Fritz11 from them through Amazon. They charged me a shipping fee that costs as much as the price of the item I purchased, and yet it’s almost a month now since placing my order and past their expected delivery date, and my item is not yet in! So disappointing!

Bobby Fischer’s Visit to the Philippines, Tokyo, Hong Kong 1973 (via nirocal)
These are the last of the photos I have of Bobby Fischer. He opened the first Philippines International Chess Tournament in Manila in October 1973. There are pictures of him visiting Corregidor and the provinces. He then went to Tokyo and Hong Kong. The last picture is of Bobby in Pasadena dated 4/19/1974, taken by Svetozar “Gliga” Gligoric, Yugoslav Grandmaster, a longtime friend of Bobby’s.
The 1962 Candidates Tournament that was held in the Dutch territory of Curacao was to have a profound effect on Bobby Fischer. He arrived full of optimism; he departed disappointed and cynical. Shortly thereafter, he wrote his famous article for the American magazine Sports Illustrated wherein he accused the Russians of cheating.
3100 Performance by Magnus Carlsen →
The rampage continues: in round four of the Pearl Spring Super-GM 18-year-old Norwegian GM Magnus Carlsen showed grit and determination to win his third game, against Russian GM Dmitry Jakovenko, with the black pieces. Magnus now has a performance of over 3100.This kid has really a long way to go. I wouldn’t be surprised if in a year or two he becomes the World Champion and/or capture the top spot at the FIDE’s rankings.
